As described earlier, an industrial floor will be used for two main purposes; defined movement and free movement. The free movement requirement is the most common and is specified in most general industrial situations. The criteria in TR34 Second edition require the free movement area of the floor to be surveyed using two different properties.
Clearly the free movement area of a warehouse with wide aisles, where stacking height or potential stacking height is in excess of, say, 8 m, needs a flatter floor than one where the stacking height or potential stacking height is less than 8 m. The height of such racking or stacking is a good indication of the tightness of the floor specification that will be needed. However, many other factors can be considered when checking which free movement (FM) classification should be applied to a particular floor. These include the forklift truck wheeltrack and wheelbase dimensions, type and diameter of tyres, and height of truck mast whilst travelling.
